Criterion 3: Whey vs. soy vs. pea — what the amino acid evidence shows

Not all protein sources are equal on paper. Gorissen and colleagues directly compared the essential amino acid (EAA) content and amino acid composition of a large panel of plant- and animal-based protein isolates using UPLC-MS/MS. Whey isolate carried 43% EAA content, compared with 21–22% for oat, lupin, and wheat protein isolates — and plant-based isolates were typically lower in methionine and lysine as well [4].
