GLP-1 prescriptions for adults with no documented diabetes and no qualifying obesity rose about 14-fold between 2021 and 2025, according to a study of Epic electronic health records published in Obesity on September 22. More than a third of those patients had a BMI in the normal range.

Medicare has never covered GLP-1 drugs prescribed purely for weight loss. Since July 1 it effectively does — through a temporary demonstration that sits outside Part D, charges a flat $50 copay, and now runs through the end of 2027.
